Dr.Santosh Kumar Balagopal  holds the unique distinction of being the only neurophysician in Oman who is both an Epileptologist  as well as a Stroke Medicine Neurologist.He has completed  2 year  Clinical Fellowships, each in Epilepsy and Stroke Medicine from University of Western Ontario , London Ontario, Canada.He is a member of several International societies including the American Academy of Neurology  , American Epilepsy Society and Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology .He has over 25 yrs of experience and served as Senior Consultant in Neurology at the Ministry of Health  prior to joining KIMS Healthcare  hospital.

Awards & Achievements: 

1. The first epidemiological study  in epilepsy in Kerala State , India, and established a comprehensive epilepsy care centre in a rural community in Kerala . 

2. Established Kerala SSPE Registry   for the first time in Kerala state , India .

3. National award for second best scientific  paper ( India ) :  Ginkgo- biloba in pharmacoresistant  epilepsy- a double blind placebo controlled study .

4. Participated in establishment of a  comprehensive epilepsy surgery program  for the first time at a tertiary epilepsy care hospital (SCTIMST) ,Trivandrum , India . More than 500 patients underwent presurgical evaluation  and subsequent  epilepsy surgery .

5. Established epilepsy program for the first time at Royal Hospital , MOH , Oman, including a computerised data system for classification  and coding of EEG abnormalties and video EEG . 

6. ”NICE Guidelines  for Stroke in Oman”-Royal College of Physicians , London . Participated /contributed in establishment/publication  of guidelines for the first time, in the Middle East .    

7. Epilepsy genetic studies in collaboration with  Sickkids hospital , Toronto, Canada  –identified for the first time new genes for Progressive Myoclonus Epilepsy in Omani population . 

8. International collaborative studies with Dr .Thomas Sander (Gene Mapping Centre , Max Delbruck Centrum, Germany) - new genes for Paroxysmal nonkinesigenic dystonic choreathetosis and Hypokalemic periodic paralysis were discovered for the first time in Omani population .  

9. Delivered Presidential oration : “Refractory epilepsy “ at Oman Medical college .

10. Invited speaker at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, -on Progressive Myoclonus Epilepsy.
